In the past few years there has been a shocking increase in the violence in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez. Many innocent men, women and children have been murdered, caught up in the cross-border trafficking of drugs, sex, guns and human beings. Ciudad Juarez is the biggest border city in Mexico and both men and women are being murdered at an alarming rate. The difference, though, between the murders of the female and male victims is significant. The murder rate for women as compared to men in other Mexican cities is significantly higher. More importantly, the murders of these young women exhibit tremendous amounts of gratuitous sexual violence.
What is happening in Juarez can be described as femicide. Femicide is murdering women simply because they are women.
The murders of women and girls in Ciudad Juárez since 1993 have received international attention, primarily due to perceived government inaction in preventing violence against women and girls and bringing perpetrators to justice
